At New Direction, we provide a small, nurturing environment where strong, trusting relationships form the foundation of everything we do. We are committed to supporting each young person’s personal growth, wellbeing, and independence through a holistic and inclusive approach to education.
Our unique setting, based around equine therapy and interaction with animals, offers powerful opportunities for emotional development, confidence-building, and learning beyond the classroom. By combining this with a broad and balanced curriculum, we empower our students to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.
We believe in each student’s potential and work alongside them to build the skills, resilience, and self-belief needed to become confident, independent individuals ready to take on their next steps in life.
Our Approach
At the core of New Direction is a person-centred, therapeutic approach. We combine structured education with creativity, practical experiences, and emotional support. Our Environment
New Direction is set on a peaceful farm and equestrian facility, home to a variety of animals including horses, rare Eriskay ponies, sheep, and birds. This setting offers a calming, hands-on experience where learning can happen in and out of the classroom.
Animal care and Equine Assisted Psychotherapy are key features of our provision, giving students unique opportunities to build empathy, confidence, and communication skills through interaction with animals.
Our Team
Our experienced team includes specialist teachers, teaching assistants, therapists, and counsellors. We work together closely to support the holistic development of each student—academically, emotionally, and socially.
Behaviour
At New Direction, we follow a relational and restorative approach to behaviour, built on understanding, consistency, and care. We recognise that students with Special Educational Needs often require additional support in learning how to manage their behaviour, understand boundaries, and engage positively with others.
A Nurturing and Structured Environment
Behaviour is not simply expected—it is taught, modelled, and reinforced throughout the school day. Our staff provide a nurturing and predictable environment, where students are supported in understanding expectations and routines. This structure helps create a sense of safety and clarity, allowing learners to thrive.
Clear Expectations and Gentle Guidance
We understand that challenges will arise, and when they do, our approach is calm, consistent, and supportive. Students are offered gentle reminders and clear instructions to help them re-engage and meet expectations. Every situation is treated as an opportunity for growth and reflection, rather than punishment.
Celebrating Positive Behaviour
We actively recognise and celebrate positive behaviour. Praise and rewards are used to reinforce good choices and encourage a sense of achievement. Our goal is to build confidence, self-awareness, and personal responsibility in each student.
Our Core Rules
We keep our expectations simple and easy to remember, guided by three core values that underpin all we do at New Direction:
-
Ready – to learn, participate, and try
-
Respectful – to ourselves, others, and the environment
-
Safe – in our actions, words, and choices
These shared values help to create a calm, supportive school community where everyone can feel secure and respected.
